What to Look For at Your Preventive Health Check-Up
Preventive health checks up are a procedure of examining your health and alerting you to any possible problems that could be dangerous to you. For most adults, an annual checkup will suffice but those whose lives are busier may want to schedule three separate checks – one for each month of the year. Why? It’s because each of us has varying levels of physical fitness. So, at least by examining our physical condition regularly, we can catch conditions as early as possible and get proper treatment if necessary.
Preventive health checkups aren’t covered by most insurance policies. But even if you do have coverage, there are many things you may want to avoid having checked. As with any medical check-up, there are common screening items that most people undergo that we all know is necessary. Yet, we don’t really think twice about them. But here are some items that you might want to skip when you’re doing your annual health checkup:
Blood pressure monitors. This is important for both adults and children. Most health checkups include blood pressure monitoring. Even though it may seem unimportant, poor blood pressure readings should never be ignored.
Diabetes testing. Since diabetes is a leading indicator of heart disease, it’s important for everyone to have diabetes testing. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, you should also get a checkup to make sure that your levels are still within safe limits. And since most people who have diabetes are usually overweight or obese, diabetes health checkups are a necessary reminder to watch your weight and to make lifestyle changes that could help keep your diabetes in check.
HIV testing. HIV testing is another must for anyone who is sexually active. Unprotected sex is one of the main causes of contracting HIV. So it’s important for everyone to get an HIV test. Your regular health checkups shouldn’t be enough; you should also get an HIV test, too. HIV is easily spread through blood transfusions, so you should make sure that you and your partner are getting annual HIV tests.
These are just a few of the preventive health checkups that are critical no matter what kind of health you have. No matter what you do to stay healthy and fit, you should get a health check-up at least once a year. It’s important for anyone to maintain good overall health. Early detection of many diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, can mean the difference between life and death.
