Mental health is much more than being fit and healthy. It is about your capacity to enjoy life fully, mentally healthy and with all your senses intact.
The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of full well-being where the person can cope effectively with the demands of daily life, is able to work productively, and is able to contribute meaningfully to his or her society”. Being mentally healthy means being at peace with yourself, with others, with life and with everything that surrounds you. Being mentally sound does not mean you are immune to having stressful situations in life. However, it does mean that you have control over how you react to stressors and how you interpret those situations. This definition of mental health is what most people believe in and it is what they should strive to attain.
However, there are some who disagree with this definition of mental health. For them, it does not entirely reflect reality. After all, what is important in life is to be happy and contented with one’s circumstances. For them, one does not need to learn about stress management and coping mechanisms, about how to meditate and have time to relax. There are many other things that define happiness and contentment.
For these people, the definition of mental illness is not a subject for discussion. They feel that the issue is best left to psychologists and psychiatrists, whom, as they say, have the expertise and the proper certifications to know the true answer. They would argue that a person with a mental illness has a brain that functions according to its own set of rules. These rules tell the brain how to interpret the world around it, how to cope up with stress, and how to be happy in any situation. It is these rules which determine a person’s reaction to a particular circumstance, whether happy or sad or neutral.
For the mental health expert, however, the definition of mental illness is more complicated. The human brain operates on a very different mechanism from the rest of the body. The definition should therefore take into consideration the way in which mental processes and thoughts operate on different levels and how those processes and thoughts affect the brain. In fact, mental processes go from the brain through the nervous system, to the spinal cord, and then to the entire body. Any change in the process will have an impact on the physical body. Mental disorders, therefore, do exist but so do physical disorders, just as blindness is a physical problem, not a mental problem.
In the end, the mental health definition you use for yourself must be one that takes into account the fact that different people react to situations differently and that therefore what one person calls a condition maybe something else entirely. Don’t try and define mental disorders in terms of symptoms alone! A mental disorder may well be a symptom of another disease. Do yourself a favor and get a professional diagnosis before you use such a definition.
