October Is Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month is celebrated in May each year in the United States. The month is focused on mental health issues and includes media coverage, local events, and movie screenings. This awareness month is also celebrated on the second weekend of May every year. To mark this event, Mental Health Awareness Month committees around the country host a series of events to get people interested in learning more about mental health and making their own personal commitments to mental health.

What exactly is this month? It is an awareness month focusing on mental illnesses and other mental health issues. The emphasis is to educate the public about these illnesses and improve awareness of how to cope with and treat them if they occur. Each state has a different month of awareness month, sometimes the same month is repeated several times or with different states. For example, in Hawaii in May, AIDS awareness month, or drug and alcohol awareness month.

The main focus of the month is to encourage individuals to develop their own mental health action plan for themselves or their loved ones. This action plan can include any number of steps to take that will make them feel empowered and improve their quality of life. For instance, if someone feels they are depressed or embarrassed about their mental illness, they can make a commitment to attend a support group or take an educational course on improving their lifestyle for dealing with their illness. If someone attends a behavioral health team’s session, they can be educated on how to cope and live with their illness, as well as learn other strategies for coping with stress from work and family.

The third biggest reason behind the increase in individuals suffering from mental health issues is the increase in the population of the elderly. As people age, they tend to become less active or capable of caring for themselves. In most cases, the causes of death among individuals older than 65 happen due to other medical conditions. However, studies have shown that more seniors are reporting these types of illnesses because of the increase in stress among the elderly. As the population ages, many people are finding it harder to stay active due to work, finances, or other responsibilities.

Since there are so many different types of mental illnesses out there, it is important for everyone to be informed. Mental health issues can range from those that only affect a person on one level to those that impact their entire lives. Being aware of the options a person has when it comes to combating their disorder can help make the decision-making process much easier. It is also important to remember that there is always hope and recovery from any disorder, even if that recovery is a slow one.

There are several reasons why October is Mental Health Awareness Month. The most obvious reason is to bring awareness to the issue of mental illnesses. Many people may not even realize that their behaviors have a negative effect on their emotional and physical well-being. As a result, joining a behavioral health team can be the first step towards recovery.
