The main purpose of health coaches is to assist clients to develop a healthy lifestyle. Other examples of special duties could include: assessing a client’s health condition. Creating health goals for a particular client. Providing personalized counseling services. Documenting the client’s progress with the help of progress reports.

Recently the need for health coaches has increased enormously due to the increasing trend of obesity, and the associated health problems it causes. Currently, there are about 100 million people who are obese, which is an increase from previous years. Obesity leads to many health problems, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. In addition, it results in lower energy levels, which directly leads to less workforce.

In view of this, health educators have the dual task of encouraging their students to lead a healthy lifestyle. This can only be achieved by informing them about the consequences of being obese and providing them with the tools and information they need to lose weight. Studies have shown that the majority of health educators have a higher success rate of reaching their targets when compared to traditional ‘food for thought’ methods of weight loss. Some of the benefits gained by health educators and health coaches include improved job satisfaction, higher salaries and higher rates of advancement within the profession.
